The groups work closely with local police, marine authorities and the coastal patrol in endeavours to reduce crime and vandalism to all boats - but paying special attention to those belonging to members of the various watches. Although similar to the New South Wales Neighbourhood Watch organisation, Marine Watches are separate and more specialised groups. Where possible Marine Watches coordinate activities with local Neighbourhood Watch areas.
Each Watch has its own area of interest and in some cases these areas are divided into smaller sectors for ease of coordination. The Marine Watch Motto is 'Observing, Reporting Helping'
