There are a number of things Marine Watch members can do to improve the collective security of boats - wherever they may be moored or stored. If the security can be improved so will the enjoyment of the boat and water.

Getting to know the owners of the boats in the circle closest to the member's own moored craft.  Exchanging information on boating areas, usage patterns, prolonged absences etc.

Promoting the expansion of a network of shore based observers who might be interested in keeping an eye on members' boats.

Participating in watch / sector activities arranged by the Committee. Suggesting activities for improving security, expanding nautical knowledge and for the safe enjoyment of the water.

Encouraging other boat owners to participate in the scheme. There are huge gains to be made with a large membership.  Security will be better, members' circle of friends on the water will increase and the opportunities for increased nautical knowledge will also improve.

Occasionally offering local observers the chance to go boating.

Helping in running of watch activities  Simply speaking regularly to the committee members and other boat owners is a good start. Security in each sector is directly related to the effort from members.

Marine Watch membership alone will contribute nothing towards boat security. The success of the Marine Watches depends primarily on the efforts of members and to this end everyone is requested to perform the occasional task.  Ideally all members would register their capabilities and/or availability with either their Sector Co-ordinator or the Executive Committee.  If the resources of the whole group could be used fully, effectiveness would increase dramatically.
There are  regular tasks that require doing  such as newsletter delivery and improving the observer network.  Furthermore there are also other tasks which arise from time to time which cannot be done by the Committee members because of their already high contribution rate.  All that is required is for regular members to let the Committee know when they might be available and what they might be interested in doing - such as deliveries, record keeping,  document preparation, photo copying, liaison, suggestion co-ordination,  sewing,  carpentry, metalworking, computer support etc. The range of skills among the membership will allow a huge scope of productive activities to be undertaken.
